Which Aetna plans this covers

The plan lines above are the ones our contract covers. Aetna sells a wide range of products in North Texas, and the important thing to understand is that “having Aetna” is not one thing. A commercial PPO through an employer, a Whole Health network plan, and a Medicare Advantage HMO are three different networks that happen to share a logo.

That is why the specific plan matters more than the carrier. Call us with the plan name printed on your card and we will check it against what we are contracted for. Aetna member services, on the back of your card, can confirm it definitively.

Referrals and choosing a primary care provider

Most Aetna PPO and Open Access members can book with us directly. No referral, no paperwork, no waiting for approval.

Some Aetna HMO products ask you to designate a primary care provider on file. If yours does, that designation happens on Aetna’s side. You do it in the member portal or by calling the number on the back of your card, and it usually takes effect quickly. We can give you the exact provider name and address to enter so the search returns the right result the first time.

If you are not sure which kind of plan you have, the card usually says. If it does not, call us and we will tell you what the verification comes back with.

What your visit is likely to cost

We cannot quote your exact cost, because it depends on your deductible, your copay and where you are in the plan year. Only Aetna can confirm your benefits. What we can tell you is how visits get categorized, which is the part that causes surprises.

Preventive visits, meaning your annual physical and routine screening, are covered in full under most Aetna plans. Problem visits, meaning anything where we evaluate or manage a specific complaint, apply to your copay or deductible.

When both happen in one appointment, both are billed. We explain that at the time rather than letting you find out from a statement three weeks later. There is a fuller explanation in why your annual physical came with a bill.

Medicare Advantage members

If you have an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan, you are likely eligible for an Annual Wellness Visit, which is a distinct service from a physical and is generally covered with no cost sharing. It focuses on prevention planning, a health risk assessment and a written screening schedule rather than a hands-on exam.

People often book one expecting the other. Our Medicare Annual Wellness Visit page explains the difference, and we are happy to do both if that is what you need.

What to bring to your first visit

Your Aetna card, a photo ID, your medication list including supplements, and any records you can get from a previous provider. What to bring as a new patient covers the rest.

Booking

We see patients age 16 and older. We usually have an opening within a day or two, and you can keep seeing the same provider rather than whoever is free.

Aetna questions we get asked

Do I need a referral to see you with Aetna?

Not with a PPO or an Open Access plan. Some Aetna HMO products require you to designate a primary care provider before your first visit, which you do through Aetna rather than through us, either in the member portal or by calling the number on your card.

What is Aetna Whole Health and does my card say it?

Whole Health is a narrower network built around specific health systems, and it usually appears by name on the front of the card. It matters because a provider can be in network for standard Aetna and not for a particular Whole Health network, so it is worth confirming rather than assuming.

Will my Aetna annual physical be free?

The preventive portion is covered in full under most Aetna plans. If we also manage an active problem during the same visit, that part is billed separately and applies to your copay or deductible. We tell you in the room before that happens.

How do I name Magnolia Primary Care as my PCP with Aetna?

Log in to the Aetna member site or call member services on the back of your card, then search for Magnolia Primary Care at our Southlake address. Call us before you submit it and we will give you the exact provider name to enter for your plan, because some HMO products tie the designation to one specific provider rather than the practice.
